Introduction

I experienced the same problem while trying to install a 64-bit version of Linux Mint inside VirtualBox. I opened VirtualBox, clicked on NEW, entered a name for the virtual machine, choose the type of operating system, but when I wanted to choose a version, I only saw 32-bit versions and NO 64-bit versions as an option. The Oracle VM VirtualBox 32-bit version was initially intended for 32-bit Windows Operating Systems, but it can also run on 64-bit Windows Operating Systems. Disclaimer Oracle VM VirtualBox is an application that builds by Oracle.

Oracle VM is an enterprise-class server virtualization solution comprised of Oracle VM Server for x86, Oracle VM Server for SPARC and Oracle VM Manager.

Oracle VM Manager controls the virtualization environment, creating and monitoring Oracle VM servers and the virtual machines. Oracle VM Manager 3 is an Oracle Fusion Middleware application, based on the Oracle Weblogic Server application server. Oracle VM Manager bundles MySQL Database Enterprise Edition as the management repository.

Oracle VM Server for x86 installs directly on server hardware with x86 Intel or AMD processors and does not require a host operating system. An Oracle VM Server is comprised of a hypervisor and privileged domain (Dom0) that allows multiple domains or virtual machines (i.e. Linux, Solaris, Windows, etc.) to run on one physical machine. The Dom0 runs a process called Oracle VM Agent. The Oracle VM Agent receives and processes management requests, provides event notifications and configuration data to the Oracle VM Manager. Oracle VM Server 3 requires 64-bit x86 hardware, but can support either 64-bit or 32-bit guest virtual machines.

Oracle VM Server for SPARC (previously called Sun Logical Domains, or LDoms) is Oracle's server virtualization and partitioning technology on Oracle's SPARC servers. Oracle VM Server for SPARC leverages the SPARC hypervisor to subdivide supported platforms' resources (CPUs,memory, I/O, and storage) by creating partitions called logical or virtual machines to take advantage of the massive thread scale offered by SPARC servers and the Oracle Solaris operating system.

5.1 Oracle VM Server for x86 Supported Guest Operating Systems

On Oracle VM Server for x86, guest virtual machines based on Linux and Solaris can be either Hardware Virtualized (HVM) or Hardware Virtualized with PV Drivers (PVHVM).

The following table lists support for virtual machines with an HVM domain type and a Linux operating system. Refer to the notes that follow the table for additional support information.

Oracle Virtualbox 64 Bit

  • You can create HVM guest virtual machines for Oracle Linux, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, and CentOS. However, the Xen PV drivers are included by default with the kernels. Creating PVHVM guest virtual machines is recommended for hardware virtualization to improve performance.

  • The minimum required kernel version for SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) 11 is 3.0.31-0.9.

Additional support information for PVHVM-supported Linux guest operating systems is as follows:

  • Oracle Linux, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, and CentOS 5.x include the Xen PV drivers in the kernel-xen variant of the kernel. Oracle Linux 5.x also includes the PV drivers in kernel-uek, the Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel (UEK). Creating PVHVM guest virtual machines is recommended for hardware virtualization with these kernels.

  • Oracle Linux, Red Hat Enterprise Linux and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server require the kernel-xenU variant of the kernel to use the PV drivers mode.

  • The minimum required kernel version for SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) 11 is 3.0.31-0.9.

  • To start a PVHVM guest on SLES 11, you must perform the following steps:

    1. Install the operating system and upgrade to the 3.0.31-0.9 kernel version.

    2. Shutdown the virtual machine.

    3. In Oracle VM Manager, set the domain type for the virtual machine to Xen PVM.

    4. Restart the virtual machine.

Additional support information for HVM and PVHVM-supported Solaris guest operating systems is as follows:

  • Oracle Solaris support begins with Solaris 10 1/13 (update 11). The Solaris 10 or Solaris 11 OS runs as a hardware virtual machine (HVM), which requires HVM support (Intel VT or AMD-V) on the underlying hardware platform. By default, Solaris 10 or Solaris 11 OS has the required PV drivers installed as part of the OS. Oracle Solaris 10 supports x86 32-bit and 64-bit architecture. 32-bit or 64-bit mode is selected at OS boot time by examining the hypervisor and the underlying hardware. Oracle Solaris 11 supports x86 64-bit architecture only.
